Play Checkers Online — Free, No Download

Welcome to classic American checkers — also known as English draughts — played on a standard 8x8 board right in your browser. Choose from three AI difficulty levels to practice at your own pace, or jump into the multiplayer lobby to test your skills against real opponents. No downloads, no signups, and completely free to play on desktop, tablet, or phone.

How to Play

Click or tap one of your pieces to select it, then click a valid diagonal square to move. Pieces always move diagonally forward, one square at a time. When one of your pieces reaches the far side of the board it becomes a king, which can move and jump in both directions. If a capture is available you must take it — the game enforces mandatory jumps automatically. For a complete walkthrough, check out our beginner's guide to checkers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rules for jumping in checkers?

Captures are mandatory in American checkers. If one of your pieces can jump an opponent's piece diagonally, you must take that jump. If the landing square lines up another capture, the multi-jump continues automatically in the same turn. You cannot stop a chain midway.

Can I play checkers on my phone?

Yes. The game is fully responsive and uses tap-based controls. Tap a piece to select it, then tap the destination square. It works on any modern mobile browser — no app needed.

Is this the same as draughts?

American checkers and English draughts are the same game, played on an 8x8 board with 12 pieces per side. International draughts (played on a 10x10 board) uses different rules and is a separate variant.

How do I play against real people?

Head to the multiplayer lobby, pick a display name, and either create a new game or join an open one. Matches are rated with an ELO system so you get matched against players near your skill level.
